Students to host 16th annual environmental science symposium

Graduate and undergraduate students will have a chance to showcase their work in the environmental sciences at the 16th annual Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology Student Symposium March 15-16 at Penn State University Park.

The student-run symposium includes oral and poster presentations, a photo contest and T-shirt design contest. Details, including a schedule of events, are online at www.essc.psu.edu/ECSS/ . The deadline for submitting an abstract is March 1.

The keynote speakers will be William Arnold, the Joseph T. and Rose S. Ling Professor and associate department head in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota; Raina M. Maier, professor of soil, water and environmental science at the University of Arizona; and John M. Regan, associate professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State.

The symposium provides students with opportunities to interact with other students and faculty across disciplines including environmental chemistry, engineering and microbiology. The event also gives undergraduate and graduates a chance to collaborate with students from other universities. In 2012, students from Carnegie Mellon, Howard, Cornell, Lincoln and Rider universities, along with the University of Maryland and Southeast University in China participated in the symposium.

Nationally-respected Texas Tech soil scientist B. L. Allen dies at 88

“Dr. Allen was a foremost soil scientist, a deeply religious individual, and – most importantly – a good man,” said Richard Zartman , chairman of Tech’s Plant and Soil Science Department. “He was the consummate field soil scientist, and he instilled his curiosity and passion in all of us who had the good fortune to work with him.”

Born on August 11, 1923, Allen was raised in Hillsboro. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy ( soils option ) are from Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific and Philippines.

Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty, Allen served as an instructor, assistant professor and associate professor of agriculture at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. During that time, he also worked with the Soil Conservation Service in Michigan.

Allen taught soil science courses at Texas Tech for almost 50 years, starting in 1959. He trained many graduate students throughout his career. Those students now hold professional positions in universities, private industries and public agencies across the country.
