Concert to raise funds for Marianas Yacht Club

Join the Marianas Yacht Club from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at Sasa Bay, Piti, for an evening session of Rockin' & Bumpin' Blues played by Old Man Rebel. Proceeds of the event support the upgrade of the club's training fleet and the Kid's Summer Sailing Camp. Take the first left after Port Authority Beach. Purchase tickets at Mermaid Tavern, Primo Surf in Agana Shopping Center, Mosa's Hot Box and the Marianas Yacht Club. Adult tickets bought in advance are $12, children ages 6-12 are $5. Tickets at the gate will be $15 per adult, $8 per child. Gate opens at 3 p.m. No outside food or beverages, and no pets allowed.

Free workshop on soil quality starts today

The University of Guam's College of Natural and Applied Sciences is offering a free workshop on soil quality and management from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and tomorrow. The workshop takes a look into the history and current state of soils of Guam and other islands of Micronesia and updates farmers, ranchers, home gardeners and interested individuals about soils and how to manage soil fertility and maintain their quality for agricultural productivity and sustainability. Today, the workshop takes place in Room 127 of the college, while tomorrow there will be a field trip from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A This American Life press release spells out why the show retracted the segment, and it isn’t pretty. The doubts started with Rob Schmitz, who interviewed Daisey’s Chinese interpreter, Li Guifen. (She  goes by Cathy Lee professionally with Westerners, according to the release.) A lot of what Daisey had attributed to Lee was false, she said. And that came on top of the fact that Daisey had told This American Life fact-checkers that Lee’s name was Anna, and that he didn’t have a way to reach her anymore. Glass is quoted in the press release:

“It was completely wrong for me to have it on your show,” Daisey tells Glass on the program, “and that’s something I deeply regret.” He also expressed his regret to “the people who are listening, the audience of This American Life, who know that it is a journalism enterprise, if they feel betrayed.”

Vanessa Bailey Appointed to Soil Science Journal Editorial Board

). The bimonthly journal is the official publication of the SSSA, an international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils.

Bailey will approve manuscripts for publication in the areas of soil biology and biochemistry.  At PNNL, her research focuses on the microbial ecology of soils and other terrestrial ecosystems, which includes efforts to understand the carbon cycling processes of microbial communities.
