VANCOUVER DESI

Growing up in India, Vandana Shiva — named an environmental hero by Time magazine — saw first-hand the harmful effects of genetically modified foods on farmers and the poor.

She has covered the topic in essays and books — of which she’s written more than 20 — including Stolen Harvest: The Hijacking of the Global Food Supply.

Inspired by her homeland, she’s collected a number of honourary degrees, including her doctoral work at the University of Western Ontario in physics focused on “non-locality and non-separability in quantum theory” and her master’s degree in the philosophy of science from the University of Guelph.

She’s since been named one of the five most powerful communicators in Asia by newsmagazine Asiaweek.

Shiva, whose home base is Dehradun — the northern Indian city nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas – spoke at the University of Victoria in Victoria, B.C., this week, where she also received an honorary doctor of laws.

It's winter! Get out a least once a day and take a walk. Will do wonders for your mental health. Some ideas? In the east, Fort Worden is always a welcome walk. Near Sequim, try Dungeness Spit. To the west, Whiskey Creek. Or the upper reaches of the Elwha.

Think global, walk local!
