Chimps show signs of fair play

If you give a mouse a cookie, will it give you something back? Researchers have long wondered whether animals play fair. A new study in chimps suggests that they do, although some skeptics are not convinced.

When economists and psychologists want to test fairness in humans, they turn to the Ultimatum Game.

Typically, one subject, called the "proposer," is given a sum of money to divide with a "responder".

If the responder accepts the proposer's offer, both are rewarded. But if the responder rejects the offer, both get nothing.

Although results vary, human proposers usually offer about 40-50 per cent of the money, and responders reject offers that are under 20 per cent — even though they will end up with nothing for doing so. Researchers interpret both behaviours as evidence for a basic sense of fairness.

In 2007, a team at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, tried the Ultimatum Game on chimps.

Science and Food! at Asymptotia

Yes, two of your favorite things, right?

I thought so. Well, consider signing up to my friend Amy Rowat’s special new course at UCLA on the subject. It will feature many fantastic chefs from some of the finest restaurants around the city and beyond, as well as some excellent food writers. The course will have a wealth of wonderful information (like at the answers to why carrots are sweeter in the Winter), and hands on practice to get involved in. I think the course is only open to UCLA students (who should be sure to register fast to get on the limited list), but there are four public events (I think you might have to register for those too, as space it limited). See the list of events here . I’ve mentioned Amy and her work here on the blog before , soho and have a look at the earlier post for more about her work at UCLA, and go here for more on the Rowat Lab. (See also a recent article featuring her lab’s work on food science in UCLA’s Prime magazine’s Winter 2012 edition ....

Food & Beverage Product Development

Industry of food and beverage development is as important as the food production itself. Food and beverage development has a task to maintain high standard of the meals prepared with care and dedication in order to satisfy customer’s needs. Importance of food and beverage development

Food development, just as beverage development is a complex process that involves whole series of smaller processes, resulting in making a customer friendly piece of snack or drink. Modern food market is more competitive than before. As soon as we enter grocery store we will encounter enormous variations of different products. At this point, importance of food and beverage development kicks in. Human body needs to intake variety substances, on daily basis, in order to stay healthy and energized. Diet needs to differ every day in a week; hence it needs to contain all the substances our organism might need. Beverage and food development industry works to provide us variety of different diet to satisfy needs of our organism for all the necessary nutrients. Edibility is not the only task of this industry as they perform to achieve specific taste to make the final product customer friendly and make it rank better once it’s launched to the market.
