Chances are, you are going to the beach next week. In preparation, you have tanned, dieted, and exercised. These are not bad things. However, as spring break gets closer, I have seen more and more girls admit to not eating, throwing up and skipping meals in an attempt to achieve a perfect body.
National Eating Disorder Awareness Week brought awareness of these issues to Samford, but there seems to be a disconnect between the knowledge and application. We have built a community on dieting tips and cleanse recipes that “flush out your system,” along with your self-esteem.
When I was a freshman in high school, I battled a small bout of depression and tried to control it with eating. As in, the less I ate, the more in control I felt. I lost a few pounds, looked “great,” but still felt awful. It was not severe, and I do not consider it an eating disorder, but I do think that I flirted with dangerous habits. That being said, I came away more aware of how easy it is to lose weight by turning down food and manipulating friends and family.
Now I have been seeing a lot of people statuses on Facebook about wanting to lose weight. I’m not an expert at all; however I felt that like it might be a good idea to give some suggestions on what to eat as one tries to focus on a healthier lifestyle. First suggestion, most people should not stick to stringent diet regime. I find that when this happens, people become obsessive about food. Look food is simply supposed to be a fuel to keep your energy up, keep you going, keep you alive. However it should be as easy as breathing. Well maybe not as easy because you don’t really have to think about breathing, you just do it. It should at least be in the easier realm.
There are very simple things that you can do to help you lose weight is to just make easy changes to what you eat. Instead of McDonald’s make your own burger at home. Instead of Taco Bell, buy some beef, spice, veggies, sour cream, salsa and taco shells from the grocery store. Instead of going out for dinner on a date or hang out night (especially if you’re going to order pasta) make your own dinner and invite the person over. With the pasta option, use rice or gluten free pasta and you can still use the same sauce, cheese and meat you would want to add. Heck you don’t even have to use rice pasta, use wheat pasta if you’d like. I make lasagna the same way most other would....
