Eat 600 calories two days a week and lose weight. Is this a fad or cutting-edge approach, asks Helen O’Callaghan

DAILY, unending deprivation, with no let-up, is the downfall for most dieters. Now, this is contradicted by a radical approach: intermittent fasting (IF) and its more rigorous cousin, alternate-day fasting (ADF). Both buck the accepted wisdom — that one must never skip a meal. This diet advocates ‘fasting’ — reducing your calories to one-quarter of the daily recommended intake — on at least two non-consecutive days a week, and eating whatever you want on the remaining days.

With the element of sacrifice dramatically reduced, dieters on both sides of the Atlantic are saying ‘yeah, I could handle that’.

Brad Pilon, in his 2006 book, Eat Stop Eat, recommended a break from eating to give the body ‘a chance to house-keep’.

dieting while breast feeding. is it safe? | Diabetic Dieting

I have gestational diabetes due to excessive weight gain with my current pregnancy. i want to breastfeed my baby when she is born but my doctor also keeps stressing the importance of losing weight after the birth, especially because if i dont the diabetes will become permanent. i was wondering if it was safe to diet while breastfeeding? the thought of becoming a diabetic has me so stressed out and i want a healthy baby but i also think i deserve to be healthy to.

Rather than concentrating on cutting calories while you are breast feeding, concentrate on eating healthy. No junk, lots of fruits and veggies, low carbs, lots of good protein.

Remember that breastfeeding itself burns 500 calories per day on average.

Add good moderate exercise, and the weight should come off just fine. Ask your care provider for a referral to a nutritionist who specializes in nursing mothers.

My gestational diabetes went away like the next day or two after i gave birth. Don’t let your doc scare you into not breastfeeding. I wouldn’t recommend only drinking slimfast or whatnot, but try grilled meats and veggies- carrot/celery sticks, yogurts, cheese slices, etc. Stay away from carbs-bread and pasta. a little is fine, but not every meal. your diabetes will be fine since you will be burning 500 extra calories per day-just by breastfeeding. you are also cutting down your chance of breast cancer in the future-just by breast feeding. So, you’re actually helping the little one by giving her all the nutrients God intended for her- and she is going to help you lose some weight!! Good luck and God bless....

What to Eat While Nursing — Naturally Mamas

During breastfeeding, your body is producing food for another human. While breastfeeding you are burning an extra 500 calories a day.

Many women start to diet to lose weight immediately after they have given birth. This is one of the worst things you can do when trying to keep up your milk supply. For the first six weeks of breastfeeding, you need to eat about 2500 calories a day. (If you are planning on breastfeeding for longer than three month, which I heartily recommend, you can eat even more- upwards of 2800 calories). After that, you want to eat at least 2000 calories a day. Breastmilk production has a straight impact from what you consume.

These calories should not be empty calories. Just like being pregnant, what you eat now is passed on to your child. (Even the flavor!) Last week, I wrote an article on what to eat when you are expecting. It highlighted the nutrients you need to help your child grow in a healthy manner without affecting the health of the mother. It is important to note that once you are done growing your child inside of you, you are not done!
