We’re surrounded by stories in gossip magazines and websites about celebrities who just can’t seem to keep the weight off. From Janet Jackson and Kelly Clarkson to Kirstie Alley and Maureen McCormick (“Marcia Brady”), we are left wondering if these celebrities can’t do it with their personal trainers and private chefs, then how can I?
They suffer from yo-yo dieting, which is all too common in the United States. It’s a rollercoaster where Americans lose all of the unhealthy fat and weight from their bodies just to regain the same amount, or more, only years later. The phenomena have left researches at the University of California at Los Angeles determining that “about two-thirds of dieters regained more weight within four or five years than they initially lost.”
It’s a hard toll both physically and mentally for those who have regressed in this pattern for years, or even decades. Recent studies have linked yo-yo dieting to life-threatening conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and cancer.
