"Welcome to Colombia!" our waiter pronounced with a cheeky grin, balancing a series of empty plates as we wiped crumbs of empanadas from our mouths and sighed with contentment. It was a good thing there was a well-timed wait between starters and the main courses, as we'd gone a little overboard with the former. But it was hard not to, as El Arriero Restaurante has temptingly rare items like empanadas, arepas and fried plantains, as well as some damn good nachos.

El Arriero doesn't look like much from the outside - or from the inside, for that matter. It has the sort of gritty, dive-bar feel that fits in perfectly in this part of town, the traffic-heavy side streets off Arbesovo náměstí in Smíchov. But its South American theme plays out well in diners' favor, with a concise menu of Argentinean steaks and regional dishes that cozy up nicely to the 200 Kč mark - a welcome surprise in what just looks like any other unremarkable bar.
