Global campaign against seeds patents
The coalition no patents on seeds started a world-wide appeal against increasing monopolizing of seeds and agricultural economically useful animals by patents. The patents threaten in their opinion the world-wide food supply and the regional self-determination with the food production. The appeal is to be handed over on 26 March 2010 at governments and patent offices into Africa, north and South America, Australia and Europe.
The grasp of the companies after the food supply of the world led in the meantime to a firm term: Monsantisierung. Because the US group Monsanto operates this tactics at the aggressivsten. It holds already over 1.000 patents lives, in particular seeds. Farmers advisablely in dependence, may not pull their own seeds to no more.
Also the United Nations warn of this danger. Olivier de Schutter, the UN-particular agent for the right to food presented this week in New York its report to the UN general assembly. Therein it determines: The oligopolies of some offerers can lead to the fact that the entrance to seeds, means of production vital for them is refused to poor farmers. And it can lead to the fact that the food prices rise, whereby the food for the poorest ones becomes still less available. So hunger crises could be still strengthened
Even Deutsche Bank writes in a study for world nutrition over patents in the agriculture: It is important that the farmers can keep and again use seeds, since poor farmers do not buy for each sowing new seeds to können.9 this range are so importantly that it not exclusively to the private sector will leave can, which has an interest to maximise the profit for the shareholders.
The international coalition no patents on seeds was created on 26 March 2007. It consists of farmers, development assistance and environment organizations. The call is supported against the Monsantisierung of farmer organizations from several countries.
